Detroit Auto Show: Green Cars

The recently concluded auto show I Detroit had one thing that vibrated across the stands of every major and some minor car manufacturers. There were electric cars in every direction that one could turn his head to. This made one thing quite clear that the next decade is going to belong to electric vehicles. Increasing fuel prices, affordable cars, eco consciousness and government subsidy to car manufacturers is pushing the number of electric cars in the market.

Cars to suit every need were on display at the Auto show from super fast race cars to practical everyday use cars. One of the first companies to unveil a race car was Porsche with the 918 RSR Hybrid. This car can compete with other gas guzzling race cars with more than 767 horsepower under the hood. This power is generated by the 91 GT# R-Hybrid technology which won many accolades and awards. Aiding this were dual electric front wheel motors and a fly wheel speed booster.

Mercedes was next with its highly pompous SLS AMG in an electric version called as the SLS AMG e-Cell. The super car caught everyone’s attention with its electric paint job. It has 526 horsepower which is supplied by four electric motors that impart 650 lb-ft worth of torque. This will be the on sale by year 2013, before any other super car on display at the Detroit auto show.

Ford launched Ford Focus Electric, its every day use electric car which will compete against hybrid and electric cars from GM and Nissan. This vehicle has been given higher electric efficiency than the other cars and also can charge its batteries in half the time it takes to charge other vehicles such as Leaf and Volt.

There were other electric cars that stole the show from the major manufacturers such as the sexy Li Ion cell Inzio from Svelte and the concept car from Venturi.
