A Brief History Of Transportation On Land

Most of the people in today’s world would take transportation for granted because transportation is available today at every beck a call. Only a handful can ever imagine how life would have been if man had never learnt to train a wild horse, or made the wheel. How did pre historic man discover these life changing ideas? From which civilization did the first idea originate? A lot of questions may ponder in to the minds of a few.

Historians have come to understand that the first move in transportation industry began in Mesopotamia by the invention of the wheel. This was believed to happen in 4000 BC. This was to be one of the most important discoveries of mankind, because even today the same principle is used for transportation purposes. But even before this the Neanderthals used horses and donkeys for farming and tilling land. Since this species of humans before the arrival of homosapiens were basically agriculturists and these animals were of huge need to him. With the invention of the wheel, transportation became easier.

This gave rise to newer markets and increased wealth of individuals. So by the 3500BC carts came into existence which led to mass transportation. These carts were of 2 wheels and were driven by horses. This gradually led to the evolution of the 4 wheeled chariots which was used for transportation of supplies. Thus man slowly learnt to make his life simpler by the discovery of the wheel. The carts were capable of transporting goods in a shorter period of time.

By the late 17th century the automobile was introduced which used the same principle of four wheels by instead of horses, the engine was used. Even today the same principle of petrol and diesel engines are used. This led to even quicker transporting of goods and perishable goods over paces in shorter time. Simultaneously taking a cue from diesel engine the early rail engines started. Today the rails are used to transport people. India is one such place whose lifeline in transportation is the railways.
